In the heart of the Central Andes, Tolima is Colombia’s third-largest coffee-producing department. For decades it remained isolated, and its great potential for specialty coffee went unnoticed.

This coffee comes from Planadas, in southern Tolima, and from neighboring areas of Huila. There, small and medium-sized farms grow coffee between 1,100 and 1,900 meters, often alongside shade trees, plantains and corn.

TOLIMA, THE HIDDEN TREASURE OF THE ANDES

FROM DISSATISFACTION TO COOPERATIVE

In 2014, ten coffee growers from Planadas founded Asoprocafees in search of fairer trade. More producers soon joined, also from neighboring Huila.

Today, having become the Cooprocafees Orquídea Cooperative, it brings together 82 producers, 17 women and 65 men. With the proceeds from coffee sales, it invests in roads, warehouses, microcredit and social programs for its members.

SEALS THAT BACK ITS SUSTAINABILITY

The members’ work is backed by Organic, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certifications. The farms mainly grow Castillo and Catimor, following the recommendations of the cooperative’s technicians.

Fermentation lasts between 18 and 48 hours depending on the climate, and drying never exceeds 50 °C in order to preserve the full potential of the bean.
