Coffee was introduced to Tanzania from Réunion, a French island off the east coast of Africa formerly known as Bourbon (hence the name of the Bourbon Arabica variety!). Although coffee arrived in the 16th century, it did not receive major attention in the region until the arrival of German missionaries 200 years later.

Since the 19th century, coffee has become one of Tanzania's most important exports, with a very domestic farming system: an estimated 95% of the country's production is produced by small farming families.

A VERY DOMESTIC CULTIVATION SYSTEM

THE TANZANIA CUP

75% of coffee production in Tanzania is Arabica and the rest Robusta. Tanzanian Arabicas belong to the family of Central and East Africans, mostly washed, bright, with some acidity and balanced in the cup thanks to the mineral nutrients of the volcanic soils that host their production.

Tanzanian coffees bear a certain resemblance to those produced in their neighboring country, Kenya, although their acidity is less marked and the cup is a little softer. This has led many to compare Tanzanian fine Arabicas with Colombian coffee, although in this case, Tanzanian coffee has a little more body.

OVER 70 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Since 1955, the Kilimanjaro Plantation organization has grown coffee on the southern slope of Mount Kilimanjaro, making it one of the oldest in the region.

Between 2000 and 2005, the estate replanted 1 million new coffee trees along with more than 10,000 native shade trees, with the goal of helping to stabilize the microclimate and combat deforestation in the region. The plantation was also equipped with a drip irrigation system that has helped to reduce water consumption by 60%, as well as ensuring an optimal water supply for each plant.

Its best practices in the field of sustainability, together with other social responsibility initiatives with the local community, have allowed Kilimanjaro Plantation to achieve the Rainforest Alliance certification of responsible cultivation.
