Coffee was introduced to Tanzania from Réunion, a French island off the east coast of Africa formerly known as Bourbon (hence the name of the Arabica Bourbon variety!). Although it arrived in the 16th century, it did not receive greater attention in the region until the arrival of German missionaries 200 years later.
Despite not being as well known as its neighbors, Tanzania is actually the fourth largest coffee producer in Africa, behind Ethiopia, Uganda and Ivory Coast. Coffee is mainly grown in the north, on the slopes of the picturesque Mount Kilimanjaro, and in the south, where producing regions such as Mbeya, Mbinga and Mbozi are located.
COFFEE TRADITION SINCE THE 16TH CENTURY
EDELWEISS ESTATE
This coffee comes from Edelweiss Estate, a farm located on the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and surrounded by native forests. The estate, which extends between 1,650 and 1,820 meters above sea level, was founded by German settlers around 1900, came into the hands of British administration after the Second World War and was purchased by Mr BN Vohora in 1969 .
As the farm is located in a very remote region of northern Tanzania, the Vohora family is closely linked to the local community. They carry out various sustainability projects to support the community and protect the natural environment. They offer apprenticeship programs, support local schools, and provide daycare for their employees' children.
A FARM IN CONNECTION WITH AFRICAN FAUNA
The Edelweiss Estate shares a green border with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. As a result, elephants and buffaloes cross the coffee plantation regularly, challenging the farm and its delicate trees.
The trees bloom between November and February, and the harvest begins in early July. In their wet mill, the cherries are pulped immediately and fermented for up to 36 hours. After fermentation, they are washed and dried on African beds in full sun for approximately 8 to 10 days. The parchment is then transported to Arusha for dry milling and preparation of the coffee for export.
For over 100 years, the Edelweiss farm has been producing the finest quality coffees in the confines of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Passionate about the coffee process, they take care of everything from the planting of the plant in the nurseries to the final shipment for export. They are present at every stage of coffee cultivation with care, authenticity and passion, with the aim of offering a cup and a unique moment of consumption.
