Rwanda is a country full of diversity and rich in fertile land. The whole country is at a high altitude, with the lowest point at 950 meters above sea level. This characteristic, together with the stable temperatures, the volcanic substrate and the cultivation in the shade, come together in an ideal geography for the farming of coffee.

So much so, that even for the most expert #coffeelovers, it can be difficult to choose a batch of Ruanda coffee from a single region... That's why this exclusive selection has been created, under the name Muteteli.

AN IDEAL COUNTRY FOR COFFEE GROWING

MUTETELI: ENRICHMENT THROUGH DIVERSITY

Our Rwanda Muteteli comes from three different coffee growing regions:

  • The cool West, where we find the Albertine Rift montane forests and Lake Kivu. This region is less hot, thus favoring the cultivation of high altitude coffee rich in nuances.

  • The volcanic North, with rich volcanic soils and green slopes that provide floral and juicy aromas, coming from the Gicumbi mountains. 

  • The wooded South, in the foothills of the Nyungwe forests, which brings body, poise and balance to the cup with grains of greater structure.

WASHING STATIONS AT THE HEART OF COMMUNITY LIFE

Coffee growing and harvesting in these three regions is done through small farm owners who are grouped into cooperatives and share the same local washing station.

Thus, in the West we find the washing station of Kanyege, which receives coffee beans from over 1,200 small local farmers.

To the north we find the Karisimbi washing station, which only 7 years after its creation in 2015, already collects more than 500 tons of coffee cherries per year. 

Finally, the Gitega Hills station in the south is famous for managing the most forested coffee farms in all of Rwanda.

The RWACOF company manages, together with the Kahawatu Foundation, the association of more than 300 coffee stations in Rwanda.

With the aim of improving the living conditions of local communities, the two entities invest in infrastructure to achieve excellence in the coffee process, while continuously training farmers in better cultivation practices.
