Malawi is a small country located in the southeast of Africa. Its economy is largely driven by agriculture, with tobacco, tea, and macadamia nuts being its main exports.

Traditionally, coffee had come to have an important weight in the country's agriculture. However, the proliferation of the Coffee Wilt Disease (disease caused by the withering of the coffee plant) severely undermined production, until it practically disappeared.

In recent years, some local companies have begun to resume its cultivation and revalue it, producing high-quality coffee beans.

THE RESURGENCE OF A COUNTRY

A ROUND CUP

The Arabica coffee variety is the only one grown in Malawi. The country's coffee is often described as sweet, delicate and floral, with notes of liquorice and spices, offering strong competition to its Ethiopian and Kenyan counterparts.

Anyone who loves organic coffee will find in Malawi a hidden gem. Malawian coffee farmers rarely use chemicals on their crops, as well as processing them using artisan and natural methods.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL AWARENESS

Founded in 1988, Sable Farming Company Ltd. is the largest producer and exporter of Arabica coffees in Malawi. His Ngapani farm, from which this coffee comes, is located in the south of the country and has more than 570 hectares of coffee plantations, surrounded by 820 hectares of macadamia nut plantations.

The farm has state-of-the-art systems for sustainable coffee cultivation. The water used is fully recycled before it is released back into the environment. In turn, all crop residues are used in a composting program to return them to the land as compost.

Beyond sustainability, the company also works to ensure the well-being of its workers, providing free accommodation and health care to all its employees, as well as its own school for the children of the entire community.

MALAWI

MPANGA

The Sable Farms Ngapani farm truly sets an example for coffee production both domestically in Malawi and internationally.

In a region with poor infrastructure, no connection to the electricity grid, and limited access to water, the Ngapani farm is a fully drip-irrigated coffee farm using its own dam. The farm built a school for the local community and, through the sale of coffee, has been able to invest in drinking water supply for the community and the farm.

The Ngapani farm alone constitutes the largest employer in the agricultural sector of the Mangochi district of Malawi. Discover more information about their initiatives in the following article:
