Guatemala is a fascinating country, with rich indigenous cultures and amazing natural habitats. One of the most striking features of its landscape are the 37 volcanoes, many of which are still active.
These volcanoes are not only attractive to travelers, but they also make up the distinctive characteristics we find in Guatemalan coffees.
THE MOST VOLCANIC COFFEE
HUEHUETENANGO: PLACE OF THE ANCESTORS, AND OF COFFEE
Located in the northwest, Huehuetenango has become one of the best-known coffee growing areas in Guatemala. The name comes from the historical Aztec language Nahuatl and translates as “place of the ancestors.”
The altitude in this area reaches 3,850 meters, which creates ideal microclimatic conditions for coffee cultivation. Due to the high altitude, the grains grow slower than usual and develop a greater density, forming a very hard core. This is achieved through intense sun exposure during the day, while cold, humid winds cool the area at night.
Along with a greater density, you also get a complex abundance of citrus and fruit aromas that make Huehuetenango coffee among one of the best in the world.
FINCA LAS AMAPOLAS
This batch of coffee comes from the Las Amapolas farm, located in the heart of Huehuetenango, in one of the most remote and highest areas of the region.
The Las Amapolas farm is organized as a cooperative, in which different small coffee growers in the area group their crops in a common wet mill. In this way, they gain better access to the export of their highest quality beans, and share tools and best practices for growing their coffee trees.
