Coffee was first introduced to East Timor in the 18th century under Portuguese colonization, thus becoming an important export for the country.

During the Indonesian occupation that began in 1975, many coffee growers abandoned their plantations. When East Timor became an independent nation in 2002, most of the crops had been converted to unsustained forests.

Exhausted by 24 years of war and the impoverishment of the population, some peoples of Timor began to resume the sale of coffee to carve out a new future.

AN NGO AS THE PROMOTER OF THE SECTOR

To help improve the quality of life in the rural community of Letefoho, the NGO Peace Winds Japan launched a coffee project in 2002, providing processing equipment and training to local farmers to produce higher quality coffee and thus increase your income.

The project has grown year after year, with happy roasters and coffee consumers all over the world. Currently the project exports about 150 tons per year and supports more than 700 households.

QUALITY AND SOCIAL AWARENESS

In 2011 the project was transferred to Peace Winds' social business branch, thus creating Café Brisa Serena (CBS). CBS is the first and only exporter of specialty coffee in East Timor.

They regularly offer workshops to workers to create quality awareness and competence. A group of CBS experts professionally manages the supply chain and uses meticulous protocols to ensure quality, from visual checks of parchment to green coffee grading.

As a result of these efforts, Letefoho micro-lots have been highly rated by the SCA and ranked No. 1 in national competitions. It's hard to find a better coffee in East Timor than Letefoho.
