Rwanda, a landlocked East African nation, shares borders with Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Despite its relatively modest annual coffee production of 20,000 tonnes, Rwanda has gained recognition in the specialty coffee sector.
Coffee cultivation dates back to the early 20th century, with significant expansion occurring under Belgian colonial rule, although with an initial focus on quantity rather than quality. The tragic events of the 1994 genocide deeply affected the industry; However, recovery efforts included initiatives such as the National Coffee Strategy, developed in collaboration with the World Bank.
SPECIALTY COFFEE AS AN AXIS OF DEVELOPMENT
A NETWORK OF SMALL COFFEE GROWERS
Coffee cultivation in Rwanda generally centers on small family plots, of approximately 250 trees, often interspersed with staple crops, which serve as the main source of income for many smallholder farmers.
Initiatives led by the government, in partnership with international organizations, seek to improve coffee quality by establishing new washing stations and providing assistance to farmers.
Washing stations like BAHO Coffee, where this item comes from, play a key role, offering better prices and support to farmers dedicated to improving their yields.
BAHO: THE ENCOURAGEMENT TO JOIN FORCES
Founded in 2016 by Emmanuel Rusarita, BAHO Coffee operates eleven washing stations across the country, emphasizing innovative processes and varieties rooted in Rwandan traditions and cultures.
The company's name embodies its spirit of unity through coffee, symbolizing family ties and resilience during adversity. “Baho” translates to “stay alive” or “be strong,” a phrase offered to encourage friends facing difficulties. Rusarita aims to extend this spirit through her company and the coffees she produces, connecting deeply with her personal story as a genocide survivor and the shared journey of coffee, which unites diverse cultures in a single community.
