Widely recognized as the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia is one of the most respected origins in the world of specialty coffee.
In southern Ethiopia we find the home of Yirgacheffe coffees. This area is actually part of the Sidamo region, but its fine washed coffees are so well known that it is often recognized as its own micro-region. The area's mountainous terrain, stable temperatures and mineral-rich soil have contributed to the creation year after year of unique and sophisticated coffees.
COFFEE, AT THE HEART OF ETHIOPIAN CULTURE
GARDEN COFFEE: SUSTAINABILITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
Ethiopian coffee is often grown as garden coffee. This means that families grow coffee close to their homes and is often intercropped other plants.
These family groups take their crops to close-by Washing Stations in the area or in their community, where the coffee production processes are concentrated in order to achieve better sales conditions.
DUMERSO WASHING STATION: FEMALE ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The Dumerso Washing Station is located in the municipality of Dumerso, north of Yirgacheffe. Many small crops in the surrounding area contribute to the washing station, which employs up to 400 workers during harvest season.
The station is owned by Hirut Berhanu, a young female entrepreneur and the first woman to own a washing station in Ethiopia.
Hirut has been involved in the coffee trade for the past 15 years as a coffee trader on the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange. She bought the station in 2010 but not until 2013, after its renovation, when it began processing specialty coffee.
