Coffee is Honduras' main agricultural export, becoming a vital element for the country's economy and the livelihood of many families.
Over the past five years, Honduras has gradually shifted attention away from its neighbors and toward its abundant supply of high-quality specialty and certified coffees. Today Honduras is the largest coffee exporter in Central America, the third largest producer of washed Arabica coffee in the world and is among the top 10 producing countries in the world.
UNA POTENCIA CAFETERA EN AUGE
COMAYAGUA: LA CUNA DEL CAFÉ HONDUREÑO
A Honduran legend says that Comayagua is the birthplace of coffee in Honduras, since it was the department in which cultivation began in 1804.
Comayagua is a region located in the central highlands of Honduras, known for its production of high-quality coffee beans. The area's high altitude, unique humid tropical microclimate and fertile soil conditions make it an ideal location for growing coffee. But this climate also poses a challenge when processing cherries, since high rainfall makes it difficult to properly dry the beans.
Coffee is one of the most important economic activities in Comayagua and the main driver of its economic development. Small producers are scattered throughout the landscape, and while Comayagua is not the densest area of coffee plantations, the producers have some of the most productive farms in the country.
CULTIVO 100% ORGÁNICO Y SOSTENIBLE
This batch of coffee comes from Molinos de Honduras, the oldest coffee exporter in Honduras. Its story began in 1960, when a local family formed the company to grind and export coffee from more than 65 nearby plantations.
Since 1980, Molinos belongs to the Volcafe group, which unites different benefits, among which is our Comayagua lot.
Molinos is distinguished by its direct export model without intermediaries, thus improving access, quality and income impact for local farmers. In turn, it supports one of the largest reforestation projects in the country, through investment in nurseries of young trees and their distribution to coffee growers throughout Honduras. Their goal is to plant more than 5 million new trees in the coming years.
